As we step into a new year, it’s easy to fill our lives with resolutions, tasks, and responsibilities. But Jesus’ words in Luke 10:38-42 remind us that only one thing is truly necessary: sitting at His feet and listening to His Word. As Jesus said, “Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42).
In this familiar story, we meet two sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha busies herself with serving and preparing, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, soaking in His teaching. When Martha complains about her sister’s perceived laziness, Jesus gently corrects her. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Many of us live like Martha, overwhelmed by tasks and responsibilities. Jesus’ reminder to Martha, “You are anxious and troubled about many things” (Luke 10:41), speaks to the heart of our struggles. We long to prioritize time with Jesus, but distractions and guilt often keep us from doing so. Yet, Jesus’ words invite us to reorder our priorities. He doesn’t dismiss Martha’s service; rather, He points out that spiritual nourishment must come first.
In our busyness, we often overlook Jesus' invitation: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). This is the rest that refreshes and equips us for meaningful service.
So, how do we make this year one of sitting at Jesus’ feet? Here are seven practical suggestions:
The Bible reminds us that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord (Deuteronomy 8:3). This year, let’s prioritize spiritual “bread” over busyness. As we learn to sit at Jesus’ feet, we’ll find not only peace but also the strength to serve others without distraction or resentment.
Jesus’ gentle correction to Martha is His invitation to us today: Choose the “good portion.” Make time for what truly matters, and let 2025 be a year marked by growth, trust, and sweet communion with Christ.
